Martin became a centre of the nationwide celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of the Slovak Nation, used by Slovaks to claim their right to self-determination and co-found Czechoslovakia in 1918. Top officials from Slovakia and the Czech Republic attended the celebration and laid wreaths in front of the historical building of the former Tatra Banka in Martin.
