Foreign Minister praises the role of diplomacy in establishment of Czechoslovakia

On Thursday, the Slovak Foreign Minister was speaking at a conference entitled "Where are Czech and Slovak diplomacy heading today?" held in Prague to mark the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovak diplomacy. As Miroslav Lajčák pointed out, the joint state fought out on the front lines of the First World War was the best alternative at the time. The role of diplomats in the formation of Czechoslovakia was decisive; strong ties between the Slovak and Czech nations were created, which have persisted until now, stated Slovak Foreign Minister. At the same time, Lajčák pointed to the rising trend of extremist ideas, highlighting the importance of the European Union in this context. "The EU in all its imperfections is the best guarantee of maintaining both our European and national ways of life," he said. The first common state of Czechs and Slovaks was officially proclaimed on 28th October 1918 in Prague. Slovaks declared their wish to join Czechoslovakia on 30th October in Martin.
