In its latest report on recycling efforts by European Union member states, the European Commission (EC) announced that Slovakia, along with 13 other countries, is failing to reach its target of recycling 50% of all household and municipal waste. At present, Slovakia recycles around 23% of municipal waste, with the 50% recycling target looming in 2020. The EC wishes to put a plan in action to ensure that these countries act in accordance with EU legislation on waste, involving visiting each country which is at risk of falling behind. The countries which the EC fears will fail in their commitments to waste recycling are Slovakia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain.
