The passenger rail carrier ZSSK Slovensko ordered immediate checks of locomotive engines beyond the scope of their regular maintenance schedule in response to a recent incident in which a Class 240 type diesel-electric locomotive burst into flames on the Galanta- Šaľa line, said spokesman Tomas Kováč on Monday. "Currently we operate 42 of these locomotives. They were manufactured in 1968-1970, and their electric components have either given off smoke or caught fire ten times over the past five years," stated Kováč. The company expects to decommission some 13 engines of this type in the coming year.
