EP delegation: We want to make sure institutions are credible

European Parliament wants to be sure that institutions in Slovakia are trustworthy, stated Dutch MEP Sophia in't Veld, after meeting Slovak President Andrej Kiska on Monday. She is at the helm of a five-member EP delegation which has come to Slovakia to evaluate the progress made in the investigation of the murders of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, as well as to examine the situation concerning the rule of law and corruption in the country. According to the Dutch MEP, since its previous visit in March, the EP delegation has been worried by reports on corruption and links between organised crime and politicians in Slovakia. "We want to look very closely at how things are developing, if they are developing at all," she said, adding that the EP group has also come to support those who have been trying to build a reliable state. The EP delegation also met representatives of NGOs, the media, Europol and prosecutor Vasiľ Špirko on Monday. On Tuesday the group is set to meet Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini (Smer-SD), Interior Minister Denisa Saková (Smer-SD), Justice Minister Gábor Gál (Most-Híd), Police Corps President Milan Lučanský and Special Prosecutor Dušan Kováčik.
