The new Police Corps president may have a shorter than seven-year mandate, most probably four, with the opportunity for applicants to apply for the post once again, according to both Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini and Interior Minister Denisa Saková. The interior minister also admitted that the new Police Corps Act is still being debated. In June, Milan Lučanský become the new head of the Police Corps only temporarily, until the new law on appointing the head of the Police Corps is approved. The changes have come following the murders of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée in late February and the subsequent mass public protests, which resulted in the resignations of then Prime Minister Robert Fico and Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák (both Smer-SD).
