Former political prisoners, unjustly prosecuted by the Communist regime, accompanied by their families and representatives of the Parliament, met in front of the prison gate in Leopoldov, western Slovakia, on Saturday to commemorate the victims of the Communist regime. "It's a symbolic place where they were tortured in their pre-trial detention," explains Peter Sandtner from the Confederation of Political Prisoners. "We should not forget the wrongdoings of the past so to avoid doing wrong in the future," added former political prisoner Branislav Tvarožek for RTVS. In the period 1948-1989, there were more than 450 thousand political prisoners in the communist regime jail facilities. Since 1989, more than 70 thousand people have been rehabilitated in Slovakia. The annual meeting to commemorate their suffering has been held in front of the Leopoldov prison for almost 20 years.
