Unemployment rose in July

The unemployment rate in Slovakia stood at 5.47% in July, having risen up by 0.04 percentage points (p.p.) from June according to data released by the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (UPSVR) on Monday. On the other hand, the number represents a year-on-year drop by 1.23 percentage points. The highest unemployment rate was recorded in the Prešov region, while the Trnava region has the smallest number of jobless people. Talking about districts, the Galanta district recorded the lowest unemployment rate and (2.1%) and the Rimavská Sobota district the highest (17.3%).

The monthly increase is partially caused by university graduates hitting the job market. "Eurostat figures show that last year 80% of fresh university graduates managed to find a job in the autumn at the latest, and we expect this to be the case this year as well. It might be even better, as the labour market situation indicates that there are more jobs available for university graduates on the market now," said Deputy Labour Minister Branislav Ondruš, adding that he expects an outflow of graduates from the labour offices as soon as in September.
