Slovak mountain porter breaks record in Czech Republic

Vladimír Hyžnay, a Slovak mountain porter, broke a 70-year-old record on Saturday by carrying a 165.5-kilogram load to the peak of Sněžka, the highest mountain in the Czech Republic (1,603 metres/5,259 ft), the Czech news website iDNES.cz has reported. As well as Hyžnay, two men from the Czech Republic also attempted to break the old record as part of an effort to pay tribute to mountain porters. The previous record was held by Robert Hofer with 160 kilograms carried in 1948. After the two-hour climb, Slovak porter Vladimír Hyžnay dedicated his record to the mountains and generations of sherpas who carried things to Sněžka. "It's not a record to me, but an expression of respect to these people," added Hyžnay.
