A new committee to oversee elections could be set up with five delegates of the Government, five of the Opposition, representatives of the Supreme Audit Office (NKU), the prosecutor-general and/or former presidents, according to the first Interior Ministry proposals included in a new election act.
As revealed by Interior Ministry spokesperson Ivan Netík, the final form of the committee will be subject to a broad discussion, however. Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák is set to hold talks with the Opposition based on a Europe-wide analysis concerning the form of such a committee. The negotiations will take place within a few weeks. The committee will oversee the funding of political parties and look into the observation of election regulations. New legislation governing elections in Slovakia should be ready for the upcoming parliamentary session, scheduled for 28 January. The regulations emerging from the act are supposed to unify rules for all elections in the country, introduce financial ceilings for campaign spending and moratoria for all elections. In addition, the ministry intends to prohibit the publication of election polls two weeks prior to a vote.
