A total of 1500 transplantations of hematopoietic stem cells have been performed by experts during the 26-year existence of the Transplantation Unit; a department within the National Oncology Institute. This, the second largest transplant facility in Slovakia, focuses on the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells, in particular for patients with haematological malignancies such as malignant lymphomas, acute and chronic leukemia and multiple myeloma. Annually, between 70 and 80 autologous (using a patient's own hematopoietic cells), or allogeneic (using blood-forming cells from a sibling) transplants occur in the department in the fight against cancer.
