According to Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák, 2013 was a record breaking year which saw the fewest accidents on the roads. As many as 296 people died in their cars in 2012.
Last year, however, these figures went down to 223 people. “There are several aspects that influenced road safety last year - the adopted Road Traffic Act, the work of the police, but also the work of fire-fighters and paramedics. Secondly, the quality of road infrastructure and the quality of vehicles”, said Kaliňák. Despite the positive statistics, Slovakia continues to struggle with drunk-driving. In 2013, as many as 5,760 drivers were found to be driving while intoxicated.
