An order issued by Defence Minister Martin Glvač to promote Edmund (Edo) Makovnik posthumously to the rank of captain was part of the funeral of the first lieutenant, who died together with Sergeant Patrik Fraštiak in a bomb attack on a military convoy in Kabul last week.
The service in Kosice was also attended by President Ivan Gašparovič and Chief-of-General-Staff of the Slovak Armed Forces Peter Vojtek. The church service for the deceased was led by Chief Military Chaplain of the Slovak Armed Forces and Armed Corps Frantisek Rabek. Glvač expressed his readiness to help the bereaved to endure the changes that await them after the departure of a loved one and at the same time expressed his deep condolences. “Edo was the top expert in the tactical air force group. It is a great loss not only for our regiment but also for the entire armed forces. We can count such specialists on fingers of one hand,” said Ľubomír Šebo, Commander of the 5th Special Purpose Regiment in which First Lieutenant Makovnik served.
