At present, there are 50 convicted criminals in in Slovak prisons serving life sentences, stated the director of the Office of the General Director of the Prison and Judicial Guards Corps (ADCJ) Adrián Baláž to TASR. "The basic rights of these convicted individuals (such as accommodation, sleeping, eating) and additional rights (purchases, walks, visitation, receiving of packages, telephone calls) are the same as other inmates, though with the higher the level of guardianship, the greater the scope of their limitations," explained Baláž. The treatment of such convicts mainly aims at maintaining a stable mental state, suppressing negative behaviour, strengthening positive personality traits, creating a realistic view of oneself and the inmates' current life situation. "Those for whom the court has handed down a life sentence shall be placed in a designated location and in a separate cell or compartment," added Baláž. Currently there are 1587 accused inmates and 8766 convicted criminals in Slovak prisons.
