At a meeting on Tuesday, Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini (Smer-SD) and US Ambassador to Slovakia Adam Sterling discussed the tariffs that the USA has imposed on steel and aluminium from the European Union, TASR learnt from the Government Office press department on the same day. Pellegrini and Sterling also spoke about the USA possibly introducing tariffs on imported cars. According to the premier, Slovak producers shouldn't be greatly affected by the aluminium and steel tariffs because they don't trade with the USA in significant volumes. "I'll personally visit our largest aluminium plant in Žiar nad Hronom [Banská Bystrica region] on Thursday and we'll discuss whether or not it will affect production," he said, stressing the importance of transatlantic ties. Pellegrini further praised events organised by the US Embassy to mark the centenary of the signing of the Pittsburgh Agreement, which served as a statement of intent to found an independent Czechoslovakia, as well as the 25th anniversary of the setting up of bilateral diplomatic relations between Slovakia and the USA.
