The Slovak Catholic Charity has called on individuals to choose charitable acts instead of excessive fireworks displays for the coming of the New Year.
“We could celebrate the coming of 2014 in town centres and villages with organised fireworks for all, but we could also celebrate by having joint fireworks with our neighbours, or with no fireworks at all. At any rate, thousands of euro end up being shot in the air, even though they could have helped the terminally ill, the homeless, or poor families”, stated the charity’s general secretary Radovan Gumulák. The charity has prepared a fundraising charity called Fireworks of Solidarity in an effort to fund hospices that help facilitate life for the terminally ill, as well as low-income families in Bratislava, the homeless, and single mothers.
