Ján Kuciak was the primary target of the murderers, the investigation reveals, according to the Prosecutor General's Office. The Slovak investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová were murdered in the end of February in their house in the village of Veľká Mača (Trnava region). It was announced at a press conference on Wednesday by the Prosecutor General Jaromír Čižnár. "This case must be clarified in order not to see such a dirty thing happening again," he added. However, he wasn't more specific on the course of the investigation. The double murder is being investigated by an international team, with an agreement on creating a joint Slovak-Italian group signed by Čižnár in The Hague on April 18. The investigative journalist's final article, focusing on the activities of some Italians in Slovakia; allegedly mafia members, and their links to figures within the Slovak Government Office, was released after his death in several major outlets worldwide, including Bild, Welt, Blick, Le Temps, Politico, Business Insider and Newsweek. Public protests in Slovakia following the double murder eventually resulted in a government crisis and the resignation of Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD), who was replaced by Peter Pellegrini (also Smer-SD).
