Seven human traffickers from Slovakia jailed for a total of 40 years, wrote the Northern Echo daily last week. The gang promised people from the Czech Republic and Slovakia jobs in the UK. Once these people arrived in Britain, the criminals enslaved them keeping them chained in cellars. Unable to speak English and defend themselves, they had to work in the day time, but only received a part of their income and the gang would apply for social benefits. According to the daily, the activities of the gang from south western Slovakia residing in Newcastle, is one of the worst cases of modern day slavery in northern England.
