The first round of next year’s presidential elections will be held on 15 March. The Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška (SMER-SD) announced the date of the elections on Thursday. Pursuant to law on presidential elections, the speaker of parliament shall announce the date of the elections no later than 55 days in advance.
The Constitution stipulates that to be elected president in the first round the candidate must obtain an absolute majority of valid votes of eligible voters. If none of the candidates obtain an absolute majority of votes of eligible voters, the second round of elections is held within 14 days. The Speaker of Parliament set the date for the second round for Saturday, 29 March. Two candidates who receive the largest number of valid votes in the first round advance to the second round. The winner in the second round of elections is the candidate who receives a simple majority of valid votes.
