Denisa Saková becomes new Interior Minister

President Andrej Kiska appointed Denisa Saková, a nominee of the largest coalition partner Smer-SD, as the Interior Minister on Thursday. She served previously as the Interior Ministry state secretary. President Kiska stated that he was not happy about Saková's nomination, a former aide of the erstwhile Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák, but he does not have the necessary powers to block her appointment. Kiska views this nomination as a wasted opportunity. The ex-Interior Minister Tomáš Drucker (also a Smer-SD nominee) resigned after not removing Police Corps President Tibor Gašpar from office. Smer-SD labels Saková a professional who has been serving at the Interior Ministry for a long time and should therefore be able manage the post. Juraj Šeliga, one of the organisers of the protests For a Decent Slovakia calls Smer's choice a derision. He points out several affairs at the Interior Ministry dating from the time when she was working there, adding that a criminal complaint is being filed against Robert Kaliňák.
