Police Chief: I will not resign because protesters want so

"I leave my post only if the new Interior Minister asks me to resign or he recalls me. Protesters on the streets and non-governmental organisations asking for my resignation do not represent the whole of society," said Police Chief Tibor Gašpar on Tuesday morning a day after Interior Minister Tomáš Drucker resigned to avoid polarizing society even more. During a press conference Gašpar recapped the good results of police under his 6 years of leadership and added that he is a professional and not a politician. Drucker, who had been in office for only three weeks, said he found no reasons to recall the Police Chief but the polarisation of society, following street protests, could have motivated Gašpar to resign voluntarily. Investigative journalist Ján Kuciak, who was murdered in February, wrote extensively about Gašpar's links to local oligarchs and his subordinates' failure to investigate alleged political corruption.
