Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia has thrown his hat into the ring for the upcoming presidential elections, set to take place in the first quarter of 2014. Previously the leader of the ruling centre-left SMER-SD party had been wary of announcing whether the rumours of his candidacy for the position of President of the Slovak Republic were indeed true.
According to the news portal Čas, a member of Fico’s party whom wishes to remain nameless believed it was, “99 percent certain”, that the Prime Minister was going to set his sights on the position of Head of State. Public opinion is in the Prime Minister’s favour, as according to recent opinion polls, Fico will most likely win the presidential elections. However, this announcement also means his party now has to find a replacement as both Prime Minister and party leader.
