The opposition Christian and Democratic Union (SDKU-DS) party will not have decided on a presidential candidate this year, instead leaving it to January at the earliest. Saturday’s Central Council is expected to commission the party presidium to make the decision on a candidate even without a primary ballot.
At the same time the ruling SMER-SD party will present its presidential candidate this week. According to the SITA press agency this will be the current Prime Minister Robert Fico. President Ivan Gašparovič indicated he would support SMER’s candidate whoever this may be.
