Prime Minister Robert Fico stepped down from his position on Thursday. Thus the whole Slovak Government fell. Earlier in the day, President Andrej Kiska met with Vice-Premier Peter Pellegrini, who brought 79 MPs' signatures declaring support to the new government. After Fico handed in his resignation, Kiska appointed Pellegrini to form a new government. The former Prime Minister will remain the head of Smer party and a member of the ruling coalition council. The current political crisis broke after the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée at the end of February. Kuciak had reported on political corruption.
