On Wednesday, Slovakia's ombudswoman Mária Patakyová presented a special report to the Parliament, pointing out a serious violation of fundamental rights in restitution proceedings. They concern properties confiscated by communists. According to surveys conducted in 2015 and 2017, Patakyová found that in restitution proceedings the fundamental right of having a case discussed without undue delay had been violated. She added that currently the duration of proceedings has lasted for as long as 25 years, and the number of unresolved restitution claims is higher than 9,000. This mainly affects people who are already retired and genuinely concerned about whether they will live long enough to see the end of their restitution proceedings.
