Slovak Prime Minister offers resignation with conditions

At a press conference on Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that he is willing to step down from his position as early as Thursday, however he outlined conditions which would need to be met. "Today, I visited President Andrej Kiska and offered him my resignation," the prime minister said. One of the requirements is that that a member of his Smer-SD party, the largest ruling coalition party, would take the position as Prime Minister, in place of calling for early elections. The current government of Slovakia has found itself in turmoil since the murders of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, and after Kuciak's final unfinished article was posthumously published. The published article covered corruption and alleged ties between top-ranking Slovak politicians and Italian mafia. Subsequently, Slovakia saw its largest protests since the Velvet Revolution in 1989 on Friday, where thousands rallied across the country calling for the dissolution of the government.
