Parliament has minute of silence for murders; no word on new elections

MPs began Wednesday's meeting of Parliament with a minute's silence in memory of the young murdered investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová who were shot in the head and chest in their home two weeks ago. Kuciak was investigating links between top government officials and the activities of Italian mafia. Wednesday's parliamentary session was completed in an unusually short time, as the opposition withdrew all its planned proposals, pointing out that to carry on as normal during the current government crisis does not make sense. The governing coalition has also not yet reached an agreement on holding early elections. This was initiated by Most-Híd, one of the parties in the ruling coalition, which was in response to the aforementioned double murders, the biggest nationwide protests since 1989, and Monday's resignation of Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák.
