Prosecutor breaks silence; gives details of high-level corruption

Vasiľ Špirko, a prosecutor from the Special Prosecutor's Office announced on Thursday afternoon that he will file a criminal complaint against Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák (Smer-SD) with alleged details of high-level corruption. He stated during a press conference that the amount of money syphoned to high-profile individuals could be as much as 200 million euro. Špirko called on all police officers and investigators to come forward to the Prosecutor General's Office if they have similar experiences and information. He added that he himself was investigated and discredited for his work on corruption cases in Slovakia, however, last week he was cleared of accusations of making mistakes during his investigations.
Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák rejected the allegations on Thursday evening, calling them absurd, reiterating that all his personal business activities were above board. Police Chief Tibor Gašpar stated also stated on Thursday, "Anyone can file a criminal complaint. I don't know what complaint he will file but I can say that he is misleading the public in many respects. The case he mentioned, which he had worked on, is now still under investigation by the National Criminal Agency. When we will have its conclusion, you will be informed about it," said Gašpar.
