Slovak women continue to find themselves in more disadvantageous positions than men in terms of access to employment, pay rates, vocational training and working conditions. This is despite the fact that the Constitution of the Slovak Republic and other legislation guarantee equal treatment for both men and women. This was highlighted in a statement from the Confederation of Trade Unions (KOZ) of the Slovak Republic, which joins other trade unions throughout Europe. Together, they urge EU member states to not only to swiftly adopt a proposed directive on maintaining a work-life balance, but also to ensure equal wages across the Union. When comparing the pay rates of women and men with similar levels of university education, men tend to earn 30% more than women in Slovakia. Additionally, women who choose to have children often find it difficult to re-enter the job market following maternity leave.
