For almost a week, residents in the Košice suburb of Luník IX have been witnessing demolition work take place work on a residential building on Hrebendova street. The multi-level housing building was reportedly in dangerous condition and was empty.
“No one in the apartment building has valid lease agreements. There were five paying families which we worked with to find housing, with one family refusing”, said Martin Paška from the Košice City Housing Company (BPMK). According to the Deputy Mayor Renáta Lenártová, state funded housing in the Luník IX area and the behaviour of residents has been a long-term problem. “Once more, residents have destroyed an apartment building, taking it back to its bare structure, consequently endangering the lives and health of the people”. The demolition and subsequent waste disposal is expected to cost the city €79,800 and is to be completed by the end of 2013.
