According to the opinions of Slovaks, a fair society should guarantee the satisfaction of all basic needs. This is the conclusion of a survey of European values which was carried out by the Sociological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Researchers asked about the importance of reducing large income inequalities, guaranteeing all satisfaction of basic needs such as food, housing, clothing, education and health care, and the importance of ensuring that people are rewarded and respected based on the results of their work. In the respondents' opinion, the strongest perceived characteristic of democracy is the state helping people when they lose their job. Ensuring the equality of income is also a basic characteristic of democracy, mainly in the opinions of women. Slovak men are more concerned about taxing the rich and supporting the poor as a characteristic of democracy.
