Creating the Schengen area is one of the greatest achievements of European integration, but this success is currently at risk, Slovak Deputy Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Ivan Korčok told TASR press agency. Slovakia joined the Schengen area ten years ago. "If there's something in the EU that people understand, it's that they can travel freely without borders. Of course, we've got used to it over the past ten years, and I consider it to be natural," he said. Korčok went on to say that Schengen has to be backed, as it is in danger. "It's jeopardised by the fact that we lost control over migration in 2015 and that checks are being carried out on several internal borders at the moment," he said, adding that the solution lies in the very logic and essence of Schengen itself - protecting the external borders in order to be able to do away with internal border controls.
