President appoints new constitutional judges

Based on the proposal of the National Council, on Thursday the president Andrej Kiska appointed Miroslav Duriš, Jana Laššáková and Mojmír Mamojka as constitutional judges. After three years of dispute between the President, the Parliament and the Court, the Slovak Constitutional Court will finally be complete. However, the President expressed concerns about the next elections of the judges.

"It is true that you have been waiting a little longer for my appointment decision. I therefore hope today that this waiting will eventually prove worthwhile for our country and that your work will contribute to strengthening the authority of the Constitutional Court in the eyes of the professional but also the wider public," stated the president in his speech to the new judges.

According to a statement released by president's press department, now it is the Government and Parliament's turn to adjust the rules for selecting candidates for Constitutional Court judges. In 2018, nine constitutional judges should be elected. Meanwhile, the newly-elected Jana Laššáková left the party Smer - SD to preserve neutrality.
