Rubbish being set alight in an elevator shaft was the reason behind the evacuation of a multi-level housing complex in the Košice suburb of Lunik IX on Tuesday night.
As of Wednesday morning the fire brigade operations officer for Košice, Radoslav Blaškovan stated that burning waste at the Krčméryho street apartments caused strong fumes to permeate the building to the point where the evacuation of 35 people, including 15 children was necessary. He added that several residents required the assistance of paramedics however none required hospital treatment. After a thorough inspection and ventilation, residents were able to return to their homes.
