Slovakia has 5.7 million debit and credit cards in circulation - more than the official population census figure - with 5.5 million of these being contactless. This was announced at the Day Without Cash conference on Tuesday organised by Visa and Mastercard under the auspices of Vice-premier for Investments and Informatisation Peter Pellegrini. He mentioned such payments provide an excellent basis for fighting tax fraud, tax evasion and also serve to curb corrupt behaviour. The popularity of such card payments was confirmed by Rastislav Vallo, chairman of the Banking Cards Association. Vallo claimed that contactless payments are undergoing a boom, with up to 75 percent of all transactions in Slovakia carried out on a contactless basis - a figure that wasn't even imaginable five years ago.
