Miroslav Lajčák at UNESCO conference on perils facing multilateralism

The stakes of disengagement from our multilateral system are so high that if we do not take action, the situation will turn against us, stated UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajčák at a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) general conference in Paris on Tuesday. Lajčák, Slovakia's Foreign Minister, said in his speech that multilateralism was now needed more than ever, it needs to go beyond formalism and that UNESCO plays a crucial role in it. At the same time, Lajčák expressed his regret over the decision by some UN member states to withdraw from UNESCO membership. The 39th session of the UNESCO general conference began on Monday (October 30) and will last until November 14.
