Slovakia has proclaimed 169 protected natural sites as sites of European significance. These will become a part of Natura 2000, the largest network of protected areas in the world. Due to shortcomings in the declaration of natural sites, Slovakia is facing proceedings from the European Commission. Therefore the Slovak government approved on Wednesday a proposal on completing a national list of such protected territories. The latest update of the list of sites of European significance contains 169 protected sites with a total area of 31,656 hectares.
