At a plenary session in Strasbourg on Tuesday, European Members of Parliament voted in favour of additional funds for the dismantling of nuclear power plants in Bulgaria, Lithuania and Slovakia.
At an EU summit in early February, Slovakia learned that the European Council had earmarked €860 million for the decommissioning of obsolete nuclear reactors in these three countries; however the original proposal from the European Commission had planned just €110 million in funds for Slovakia. Now however, Slovakia is to receive €200 million, an increase on the original proposal. Such expenditure on the dismantling of nuclear power plants in these three EU Member States are part of the long-term EU budget from 2014 to 2020.
