Slovak Foreign Minister tells US President his support is vital for UN reform

UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajčák told TASR on Tuesday that he had more than 50 bilateral meetings and 30 speeches at various events and conferences during the General Debate that concluded on Monday. "I spent more than 20 hours on the presiding chair of the General Assembly, listening to the speeches of world leaders," said Lajčák, adding that the events focused on various issues, including the nuclear arms proliferation ban, mediation and prevention of conflicts, Africa's industrial development, work with the young and a global environmental agreement. "I also met US President Donald Trump. We concurred that people must be at the centre of the UN's attention. I told the president that an active role and engagement by the USA and is key for the UN, and his support will be critical for the debate on a UN reform to make it more effective. The meeting had a positive tone, an important fact considering that the USA is one of the main financial donors of the organisation," said Lajčák.
