Artist given suspended sentence for vandalising Soviet memorial

Artist Peter Kalmus has received a suspended sentence of four months in prison after being found guilty of vandalising four Communist symbols of a sickle and hammer on the memorial dedicated to fallen Soviet soldiers in the centre of Košice last August. He published the verdict on his social network profile. "I've had nothing to do with this thing," he said adding that he will appeal against the decision. The artist perceives the sentence as purpose-built and linked to another legal process, presided over by the District Court in Svidník, where he faces charges over his damaging of the bust belonging to former Communist leader Vasiľ Biľak.
