Slovakia fully respects the verdict of the European Court of Justice, however, its political stance towards the question of migrants and the mandatory quotas for their redistribution will not change. This stems from Prime Minister Robert Fico's reaction on Wednesday to the ruling by the European court. The lawsuit's rejection stirred a much more heated debate in Hungary, which filed the original legal challenge to the quota system with Slovakia two years ago. "Politics has raped European law and values," stated Hungary's foreign minister Peter Szijjarto at a press conference, further stating that Hungary considers the court's decision to be appalling and irresponsible. However, in response to a request from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban that the European Commission should cover half of the costs that Hungary has incurred in protecting its southern border from migrants, the Slovak PM praised Hungary for doing a very good job in protecting its border.
