Kosice has received a special award at the Information Technologies and Public Administration (ITAPA) international congress in Bratislava for developing a system of pre-paid electricity supplies that also prevents illicit drawing of energy from taking place.
“The project is based on the possibility to buy a requested amount of electricity. After the payment is received, the system automatically turns electricity on, and after the pre-paid amount has been drawn, the system turns electricity off. This sophisticated system is also able to detect the illicit drawing of electricity,” said the city's spokesperson Martina Urik Viktorinová, adding the system helped the payment discipline significantly. “After the project was launched, financial discipline improved quickly, with most customers now paying regularly and well in advance. There have been no incidents with the illegal drawing of electricity and no attempt to damage these power meters,” she said.
