Slovak movie catches attention of US audiences

The Slovak-Czech coproduction film The Teacher or Učiteľka is attracting attention in the US. Last week, The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times praised the work of its creators. The movie makers portrayed a corrupted blackmailing female teacher who impacts not only the lives of children but also their entire families. "The Teacher's strength, in fact, is that it functions beautifully on parallel levels. Like the remarkable films Eastern European countries turned out regularly during the Soviet era, it marries a character-driven story with social concerns, in this case a deft parable about the kind of corrupt privileged society nominally egalitarian Socialism created," wrote Kenneth Turan of the LA Times.
