New European legislation increasing the emission standards for coal burning plants has been introduced, wrote the Euractiv.sk website last week. The new limits will come into force as of 2021. According to the DNV GL Company's study, cited by Euractiv, as many as 80% of current European coal burning plants do not meet these standards. Slovakia was against the new legislation, but will also need to adjust to it. The study also indicates that all Slovak black coal capacities and 94% of brown coal capacities do not meet the standards. The modernization of Slovak capacities is estimated at €91 million. The Brussels-based NGO, European Environmental Bureau, expects that some of Europe's coal-burning plants will close down and the new requirements will increase energetic transformation.
