Education, Science, Research and Sport Minister Peter Plavčan (a Slovak National Party nominee) announced his resignation on Thursday morning, after being asked to do so by the Prime Minister and head of the strongest coalition party SMER - Social Democracy, Robert Fico on Wednesday. The Slovak National Party's leader Andrej Danko must now come up with the name of the new minister. Education Minister Plavčan has been facing criticism related to the shady distribution of EU funds for research and innovation since early July. Subsidies were reportedly provided to firms that had never been involved in research.
