The process of ratifying the Istanbul Convention on combating violence against women was postponed by the Slovak Government on Wednesday on the proposal of Justice Minister Lucia Žitňanská (Most-Híd). The minister proposed postponing the ratification process as it seems that two antagonistic opinions on the issue have emerged in society, as confirmed by a roundtable discussion organised by the Justice Ministry in June attended by NGOs from both camps. According to Žitňanská, the issue obviously requires a deeper and more time-demanding debate. The date for ratification has not been set.
