Smaller harvest due to droughts

The crop harvest in the southern parts of Slovakia has ended. According to Milan Semančík from the Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber, this year's yield of grain cereals will be lower year-on-year, especially because of a spring frost and long-lasting droughts in summer. The estimated decline in harvested crops is about 20%. In 2017, the total cereal yield is 2.5 million tons, which is approximately 600,000 tons less than last year. In connection to the dry and hot weather, farmers call for setting up a Risk Fund that would cover their so-called non-insurable risks. According to the Food Chamber, the state should also support the construction of irrigation equipment in the fields.
