Researchers at Prešov University have cultivated a new type of peppermint, naming it Kristinka. Kristinka is very specific and unique because it contains more menthol than the previously existing kinds of mint. Typically, peppermint contains around 40 percent menthol, with the new type from Prešov having around 77 percent. The Community Plant Variety Office in France has also recognized this discovery, giving the university legal protection for the Kristinka variety of peppermint. Several companies have already shown interest in using Kristinka, for instance in herbal teas or cosmetics.
