Slovaks celebrate the day of Matica slovenská

154 years ago, Matica slovenská, a significant social and cultural institution for the territory of the whole of Slovakia, was established. August 4 was declared a memorial day in Slovakia back in 1993. A general assembly was established in the northern Slovak town of Martin 1863 with about 5000 people of Slovak nationality meeting to celebrate the thousand years since the arrival of St Cyril and Methodius to the territory of Great Moravia, establishing the first system of Slavic writing. The Matica slovenská institution was abolished in 1875 as the result of the growing power of the Hungarian empire. It started working again in 1919. Its charter was amended in 2011.
