The time is ripe for a reform of the United Nations' counter-terrorism architecture, said Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák during his meeting with newly appointed Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office Vladimir Voronkov in Bratislava on Thursday. The UN should stand on the front line of the fight against terrorism, said Lajčák, who has been elected president of the upcoming 72nd session of the UN General Assembly. Lajčák also said that the UN's role should be to set standards and international institutional frameworks for cooperation with regional organisations and other partners. "Terrorism and violent extremism are global challenges that go beyond the borders of states or cultures. They must not be associated with a belief, nationality or ethnicity. Prevention must play the key role, especially in fighting the radicalisation of young people," said the Slovak minister. Lajčák also noted that the UN General Assembly is to adopt the sixth review of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in the first half of 2018.
